Mobile phones have changed dramatically in the past few years. Initially, mobile phones were only allowed to call other phones and not much else. However, they have advanced to allow people to take pictures, videos and even play music. The mobile phone revolution is definitely underway, with over 87 percent of the world’s population owning and using a mobile phone on a daily basis. The advancement in technology has allowed these devices to change how people do normal everyday tasks. Ordering food, playing video games, surfing the internet and connecting with friends is all done on mobile phones.
Mobile Phone Battery LifeThe one thing that has not changed with mobile phones is their power cable and insufficient battery life. Battery life is one of the most important features of a phone. Smartphone users are relying on their phones more every year and can not afford for their phones to run out of battery life. Ironically, the battery life of phones has not increased as much as phone technology would lead people to believe. This can be caused by a number of reasons including:
New technology: Cell phones were inherently created for the sole purpose of calling other people. New technology has added so many battery draining features to phones. The batteries themselves have undoubtedly become more efficient, but the extra battery life is used by these features.
Inefficient design: Mobile phones have inefficient design features. Touch phones, with bright displays are, by design, going to use more battery power. Some companies have attempted to introduce battery life saving features, but they are not adequate enough to notice.
Battery ConcernsBattery life may not be as concerning to people who do not use their phone’s many features, but to those that do, it should be. The lack of battery advancement will eventually cause major problems. These problems can include a slow down in new features or an even shorter average battery life in the future. This is a major concern that seems to be ignored by the industry.
Phone Charger Concerns
Battery concerns could be offset slightly if the charging times were lessened. However, phones can take up to four hours to charge. This is a significant amount of time considering the dependency that users and businesses have on their mobile phones. The power cable of the chargers has to be advanced to allow for a much quicker charge.
Average Battery LifeThe average battery life in the industry varies so drastically it is concerning. The lower end of the spectrum has 5 different cell phone models with an average battery life, when talking, less than four hours. The lowest being a very basic flip phone, the Motorola i412, with a mere 3 hour battery life.
The high end phones in the industry are better, but not by much considering the massive cost increase. Motorola ironically makes the phone with the longest battery life as well. The Motorola Droid Razr Maxx boasts a 19 hour battery life and the Blackberry Curve 9360, the fifth most efficient phone, has only 12 hours of battery life.
Mobile phone designers need to find a way to extend their phone’s battery life and also create a more efficient power cable. Once these two enhancements are met, phones will have a much faster charging time and longer talk time on the battery. Eventually, the industry is going to find itself at a technological standstill until they find a way to fix these issues. Until then, users will have to deal with short battery lives and super long charging times.
