The world of “big phones” or “Phablets” as they’re called just got more interesting, as the China-based Huawei company, just dropped its hat in the ring with the Ascend Mate. This behemoth has the largest screen ever seen on a mobile phone, read on to find out more about the super-sized device.

Meet the Huawei Ascend Mate

Officially launched at CES 2013 earlier this month, the world actually got a sneak preview of the Ascend Mate in late December 2012, when the Huawei executive, Richard Yu, presented a few corporate guests with the chance to see the impressive phone a couple of weeks early.

The 6.1-inch Huawei Ascend Mate

The Ascend Mate, which is an Android smartphone featuring a full HD 1080p display and a giant touchscreen measuring just over six inches, is now the world’s biggest phone or Phablet, beating out the former record holder – the Samsung Galaxy Note 2 – by more than half an inch WoW! The Galaxy Note 2, which sports a 5.5 inch display, was previously the largest Smartphone on the market, but as the Ascend Mate has now introduced itself to the world along side another less impressive Huawei offering, the competition in the “big phone” niche just got a bit heavier.

Specs and Features

Of course, a big display isn’t all the Ascend Mate offers. Any model that’s going to make a go of it in the industry needs to compete on multiple levels, and Huawei strategists and developers certainly understand what it takes to compete.

The Ascend Mate’s Key Features

  • Android OS, v4.1 (Jelly Bean)
  • IPS+ LCD capacitive 6.1″ touchscreen with Corning Gorilla Glass
  • 1.8GHz quad-core processor with K3V2 chipset
  • 1080p resolution with 361 ppi
  • 8MP Camera with autofocus and LED flash
  • 2GB of internal memory and up to a 32GB memory card
  • GPRS, EDGE, HSDPA, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, USB
  • 4,000mAh battery

With all that power and hardware, you’d think the Ascend Mate would have to be big all over, but thanks to the high-tech components and focus on functionality, the phone still manages to measure just under 10 mm in thickness.

Though the Ascend Mate is being marketed as simply a mobile phone – big although it may be – the industry is all abuzz with the term “phablet”, which is an amalgam of “phone” and “tablet”, since giant smartphones sort of warrant their own category and terminology. Regardless of what you call it, the Ascend Mate is bound to make waves in the industry. It is not just a big phone, but offers big features too.

Of course, not every consumer’s interested in a giant smartphone, and Huawei knows it. That’s why the Ascend D2 and the Huawei W1 will also be hitting the market in 2013.
